Counsel, Office of General Counsel

The Office of General Counsel provides legal advice and counsel to management to ensure that company programs and operations are in compliance with legal requirements.

The Office of General Counsel provides legal advice and counsel to management to ensure that company programs and operations are in compliance with legal requirements and that transactions are structured in order to achieve the company's goals and objectives. The insurance industry is highly regulated so we help ensure compliance with the laws and regulations of each state where we do business. We review contracts and agreements, provide counsel and advise on all legal aspects of sales and marketing activities and the activities of the executives and various departments. We also provide counsel and advice on human resources and benefit plan issues.

My duties are varied. For example, on any given day I might review a software license or a new insurance policy contract, interact with outside counsel on one of several cases currently in litigation that I'm handling, consult and advise HR on an employment action, review marketing material like print ads, or assist with the review of translation of web content from English to Spanish, for the migeico.com website. Every day is different and unpredictable. You never know who you'll be working with from region to region or department to department or what issues you'll be researching and handling from one day to the next.

GEICO is a great place to work. It's a solid company with a great future.

Director and Assistant Actuary, Pricing and Product Management Department

The best thing about working for GEICO is the opportunity that is provided to all associates for their personal growth and development.

The role of the Pricing and Product Management Department within GEICO is to utilize innovative analyses to recommend and implement underwriting placement, product options, and premium rates that meet our customers' vehicle insurance needs and enable the company to grow profitably.

Our department ensures that the company placement and rates for our customers are appropriate based on their risk profile and probability of loss. The challenge is doing this in a way that produces a competitive rate and desired coverage options for existing and potential policyholders, while also generating enough premium dollars to generate an acceptable underwriting profit for the company after covering all of our claim costs and expenses.

I manage a team of Product Management and Actuarial associates that has responsibility for GEICO's Region 4 states. My primary duties include monitoring the growth and profitability within our states and working with my team, senior management, and regional associates to recommend and implement changes to our underwriting placement, rate level, and coverage options that will ensure profitable growth and improve our competitive position. The work that we do ultimately determines the premiums that customers pay for their vehicle insurance. I enjoy the ability to use my analytical skills every day in ways that have a direct impact on GEICO's business decisions. Even though I am sure most people would rather spend their money on something other than insurance, I am proud to work for a company that provides this necessary product at the lowest possible cost and with a commitment to outstanding customer service.

The best thing about working for GEICO is the opportunity that is provided to all associates for their personal growth and development. Throughout my career I have been encouraged by supervisors and managers to take advantage of training classes and other opportunities that have helped prepare me for additional levels of responsibility. I have always received the necessary support and guidance from other associates to work to my full potential, and I feel that GEICO strives to provide this type of supportive environment for all associates. The thing I like the best about my job, though, is the opportunity to work with other associates. GEICO really is like a big family where people care about each other and want everyone to succeed. That makes it a wonderful place to work!

Product Management Analyst, Underwriting and Product Management Department

As a Product Analyst, I am responsible for evaluating business factors and using this information to propose changes in our business in order to maximize growth and profitability.

As a Product Analyst, I am responsible for evaluating business factors (such as company/tier structure, closure, retention/attrition, loss ratios, and demographic profiles) and using this information to propose changes in our business in order to maximize growth and profitability.

We are also tasked with monitoring any and all changes in state laws. In addition, as a Product Analyst within the Competitive Intelligence section of Product Management, I am responsible for conducting product research and development for GEICO and for our major competitors. Using Excel, Access, SAS, and SQL I am able to analyze data for both new and current business and determine what impact our changes and the competition's changes have on our closure, retention, and competitive position in the market.

Product Management, in conjunction with Marketing, Actuary, and Regional management has the ability to directly impact GEICO's profit sharing since our combined efforts affect both new business growth and retention, as well as the company's expenses.

Overall, the main function of the Product Management Department is to make sure GEICO is growing profitably. It is a constant balancing act - too much growth or too much profitability would not be good for the company. This becomes even trickier considering the insurance industry is quite risky and highly regulated. Because each state has different laws and regulations, our job is very state specific.

What about my job do I love? I love that, for me, there is no "typical day." I get the opportunity to work on different projects with different people within the department and outside of the department. I absolutely love the people here at GEICO. From day one, I have enjoyed meeting everyone I have had the opportunity to work with. GEICO's employees truly make the company.
